What exactly is a thin-film transistor (TFT)?

Beijing time April 3 news, China Touch Screen Network reported that everyone may still feel relatively unfamiliar with the three English letters TFT. Even if you have heard of it, you may only have a vague understanding. However, TFT is closely related to many IT products, such as monitors, tablets, mobile phones, televisions, and other products that can display images on screens, all of which rely on TFT. Moreover, many users may confuse TFT with types of LCD panels. So what exactly is TFT?

Currently, whether it is LCD monitors, mobile phones, tablets, monitors, or televisions, most of their screens use an "active matrix" structure, which employs a device called "thin-film transistor" to turn pixels on and off. TFT refers to this "thin-film transistor."

TFT stands for thin-film transistor, where each liquid crystal pixel is driven by a thin-film transistor integrated behind the pixel, allowing for high-speed, high-brightness, and high-contrast display of screen information. Each pixel point of TFT is controlled by the TFT integrated on itself, making it an active pixel point. Therefore, not only can the speed be greatly improved, but the contrast and brightness are also significantly enhanced, while the resolution reaches a very high level.

TFT drives the charging of pixel capacitors.

TFT is located in the pixel driving module within the glass substrate at the bottom of the LCD panel, and its form is thin-film, embedded together with pixel elements in this driving module. Generally speaking, the characteristics of TFT are basically the same as those of semiconductor transistors, where its driving current charges the pixel capacitors and lights up the pixels.

The TFT-LCD panel can be viewed as a layer of liquid crystal sandwiched between two glass substrates, with the upper glass substrate combined with a color filter, while the lower glass has transistors embedded in it. When current passes through the transistors, it generates a change in the electric field, causing the liquid crystal molecules to tilt, thereby changing the polarization of light, and then using polarizers to determine the brightness state of the pixels.

In addition, the upper glass is bonded with the color filter, forming each pixel that contains red, blue, and green colors. These pixels that emit red, blue, and green colors constitute the image displayed on the panel.
