What is a transparent display screen?
Aug 16,2022
In the Chinese market, with the rapid development of technologies such as 5G, ultra-high-definition display, and the Internet of Things, as well as the demand for smart cities and high-tech consumer upgrades, the transformation of new display industries like transparent OLED is accelerating. Currently, transparent OLED has entered places like museums, and the application scenarios in daily life are continuously enriching, leading to numerous opportunities in the transparent OLED commercial display market.
According to data released by market research firm RUNTO, the scale of China's commercial display market exceeded 180 billion RMB in 2020, and the demand for commercial displays continues to increase. It is expected that from 2020 to 2025, the compound annual growth rate of China's commercial display will reach 11.9%. Industry insiders believe that transparent OLED will lead the future commercial display market with its differentiated value.
A transparent display screen is a screen when in use and transparent glass when not in use. This characteristic makes transparent displays particularly promising in the commercial field, especially in retail scenarios; even in home televisions and emerging technology-based renovation markets, transparent displays may become a revolutionary new technology. The main types include OLED transparent screens, LED transparent screens, and LCD transparent screens.
OLED transparent screens are self-luminous transparent organic OLED screens made of OLED material but using transparent technology, similar to the sci-fi transparent screens in movies. Display content can be seen from both directions, and non-luminous pixels present a high transparency state, allowing for virtual reality overlay display. OLED is currently the most mature technology for developing transparent televisions. An OLED transparent screen is an organic light-emitting screen that requires transparent OLED display devices to form the OLED substrate, with the electrode material being transparent. When the device is off, the light transmittance reaches over 85%. When it is on, light can be observed from both sides. The key to OLED transparent screens lies in the use of transparent electrodes and organic films, which have low resistance and high light transmittance. Additionally, the OLED screen itself has self-luminous characteristics, meaning that each red, green, or blue subpixel emits light on its own without relying on an additional backlight source, achieving better transparent display effects.
LED transparent screens, as the name suggests, are LED display screens made to appear transparent. They have been optimized from opaque to transparent at certain angles, reducing the obstruction of the light board and structure to the viewer's line of sight, allowing for a clear view of the scenes behind the display screen, thus making the content appear three-dimensional and giving the impression of floating objects, while also facilitating observation of items behind the screen. LED transparent screens have specifically improved chip manufacturing technology, lamp packaging, and control systems. The watermark structure design greatly enhances the transparency of the watermark. LED transparent screens are a type of inorganic transparent light-emitting screen. The main components (chip lamp beads) control the display of text, images, animations, videos, and other information through light; when designing the display content screen, unnecessary background colors can be removed and replaced with black. Only the content to be expressed needs to be displayed. During playback, the black parts do not emit light, maintaining the same transparent effect as before.
LCD transparent screens have a backlight layer at the bottom, which illuminates the various layers above it—this at least indicates that most layers of traditional LCD screens are originally light-transmissive. Traditional LCD screens remove the backlight layer, including the light guide plate, and then use natural light or other light sources as backlight to illuminate the screen, naturally making the screen semi-transparent. LCD transparent screens are essentially an incomplete liquid crystal screen, invented as an application mode by removing the backlight unit behind a normal screen, meaning that the object to be displayed must be placed between the backlight unit and the display layer. LCD transparent screens require a box to serve as the backlight unit; otherwise, they cannot display normally. LCD transparent screens do not have self-luminous characteristics and require a backlight source as a supplement; in a non-powered state, they are not transparent and display as black.
Transparent OLED display screens are widely used in digital signage, transportation, architecture, home, and other scenarios. For example, in Beijing Metro Line 6 and Shenzhen Metro Line 10, transparent OLED display screens have been put into use; in museums, OLED transparent screens can provide more detailed and comprehensive knowledge interpretation, tell historical stories, and give ancient collections a new life, promoting the digital experience of exhibitions; used in home screens for interior decoration, they can enhance the sense of spatial integration and improve the high-end feel of the decoration; when applied in high-end brand points, one can see displayed products and image information, highlighting a high-end image and achieving better advertising effects. Transparent LED display screens are widely used in stage design, large shopping malls, glass windows, technology venues, and architectural media. Transparent LCD display screens are widely used in large shopping malls, display windows, and other scenarios.
