Analysis of Glass Panel Slimming Technology and Its Necessity

The demand for thinner mobile devices is increasing, and the displays of emerging consumer electronic products such as smartphones and tablets often have a thickness of only 0.4mm to 0.6mm. Currently, TFT devices find it difficult to handle substrate glass below 0.3mm, which significantly affects yield and cost. Traditional TFT and CF are generally around 0.5mm, and with the intermediate liquid crystal, they typically reach about 1.0mm to 1.4mm. The most economical way to meet the demand for thinner display devices is to reduce the thickness of the glass through chemical or physical methods.

Analysis of Glass Panel Slimming Technology and Its Necessity

The demand for lightweight mobile devices is increasing, and the display screens of emerging consumer electronics such as smartphones and tablets are often only 0.4mm to 0.6mm thick. Currently, TFT equipment finds it difficult to handle substrate glass below 0.3mm, significantly affecting yield and cost. Traditional TFT and CF are generally around 0.5mm, and with the intermediate filling liquid crystal, it generally reaches about 1.0mm to 1.4mm. The most economical way to meet the demand for lightweight display devices is to reduce the thickness of the glass through chemical or physical methods.

Glass thinning is the process of reducing the thickness of the TFT and CF of the panel module by about 40% using chemical or physical methods to meet the demand for lightweight mobile products. It originated in Japan, and its competitiveness is mainly reflected in three aspects: one-stop solution capability, which requires not only thinning processes but also coating, polishing, cutting, and other processes; refined management capability, as this business is labor-intensive, it requires precise control of processes and techniques to maintain high consistency; environmental qualifications, particularly in waste treatment capabilities. Currently, due to the mainland's leading position in glass thinning technology and its labor cost advantages, there is a clear trend of transferring glass thinning to the mainland. BOE announced at the 2013 IDF conference that it would increase the proportion of thin panel shipments; in 2014, with the launch of Apple's iTV, the demand for lightweight smart TVs will become even more apparent.

The necessity of glass thinning:

After thinning, the panel has two advantages: the importance and thickness of the panel are reduced by more than 40%; the quality of the panel is significantly improved, such as a substantial enhancement in reflection performance and conductivity. Previously, glass thinning was mainly applied to high-end models and special application devices. With the release of the iPAD in 2009, the glass thinning market began to explode. Subsequently, a large amount of thinned glass was applied to netbooks, and in the second half of 2013, we expect ultrabooks to explode. "Lightweight" is an important indicator for ultrabooks, so there will be broader space for growth.

In addition, in the first half of 2014, the iTV is expected to be released. From the perspective of the industry chain, Apple has set extremely high requirements for the thickness of the iTV. We expect that, similar to the impact of the iPhone on smartphones, the iTV will serve as a benchmark to guide the lightweight trend of smart TVs, significantly driving the demand for glass thinning.
